View Full Version : My dog is a mommy
ALmost, anyway. We have puppies coming next week. It is my first litter and I couldn't be more nervous. She is a heinz 57 and I bred her to a border collie. I can't wait to see them. I would love tips on what to expect.

Why, oh why, with all the homeless dogs in this world would you breed even more? Do your best to take care of these pups, and then get mom spayed!!!!

Importance of Spay/Neuter
Between 8-12 million companion animals are euthanized each year in America due to lack of homes. Only 1 in 9 cats and dogs born in the United States will find a home. The rest will be destroyed because nobody wants them. Could you choose which animal will live? It is a choice no one should have to make. Shelters are forced to make this decision every day. You can be a part of the solution by doing your part in spaying/neutering your pet! Also, when you adopt, go to a shelter and adopt an abandoned purebred or an adorable mutt, instead of supporting a backyard breeder or a pet store. Shelters often offer spayed or neutered puppies and dogs for a lot less money than do the backyard breeders and pet stores.
Thousands of pets are ALREADY in this world trying to find a home. Don't make it harder for them - SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET!

*Sigh*
The time to ask questions about breeding is before the breeding takes place.
What even made you think of breeding your dog?
She's a mutt. She may be a nice pet but breeding quality she is not and never will be.
Did you really think this through before breeding her?
Are you prepared to lose her or the pups?
Breeding is not for the faint of heart. Heartbreak can happen in an instant.
Please leave breeding to those who will do it ethically and responsibly.
Have your dog spayed. Spay and neteur ALL pups before they go into their new homes and don't ever let this happen again.

I think it is very sad that you are now added to the list of BYBs in the world but it isn't the puppies fault and I will help with any questions you may have though I do not agree in breeding just to breed especially when the dog is mixed :(
Puppies are a ton of work and responsibility. Do you have homes lined up yet???? If not you need to start screening potential homes asap. Get the pups microchipped and spay/neutered before they leave you that is the responsible thing to do
Hopefully the mama will whelp OK. Hope for the best but always be prepared for the worst .
Do you have a whelping box???
Once she goes into labor keep her and the rom she is in quite and stay calm. If she is in distress at all or doesn't deliver in a timely fashion after going into labor call the vet ASAP.
You will need towels and iodine watered down a suction tool so if you have to clean out their air ways, scissors, thread to tie off the cords if needed, a smaller warm box to move pups away from mama as she is delivering so they don't get squashed.
keep the room toasty warm
Keep the emergency vet # on hand
don't forget a camera for lots of picts too
I like to have a scale to weigh the pups to monitor their growth
thermometer to check on the mama
Don't let the mama eat all the afterbirths or she'll get the runs
Start collecting newspaper ASAP. You'll need it when the lil poopers get going LOL
Lots of luck. Please have her spayed after this
