Hi all, I'd like for you to meet the newest foster baby. This is a little 6.5 month old THL female named Cassie. It appears Cassie has had it quite rough this first 6 months of her life. Her ears appear to have been either severely sunburned, severe fly bites (or both) on them, there are even little notches missing in one; her little nose has been sunburned; her back has been scalded, allegedly from spray on Frontline treatment (although I'm left to wonder if it wasn't more from a severe sunburn or some other cheap flea treatment); she has a closed ear canal, and a badly infected left eye (I know she had an entropian fixed, but that's been some time ago). I have some Terramycin eye ointment and I've already used it on her & will continue until we get to the vet. I'm also going to have the vet take a look at her right front foot, it just doesn't appear right to me. The area just above the toes (sorry, don't know technical term for it) appears to be swollen and when she stands it looks as though that front foot is turning outward. She doesn't really appear to be favoring the foot, but I'll have my vet check it out regardless.

07/17/07 UPDATE:
Sassy Cassie went to the vet this a.m....and stole everyone's hearts. Doc believes that she has a staph infection secondary to severe sunburn, he does not believe her skin condition is due to mange. He has put her on a 3 week course of Abx. As for her eye, either it was never fixed as I was told by the previous vet (who also neglected to tell me about the closed ear canal), or that vet did a crappy job of it as she still has an entropian. I have scheduled her spay for 08/01 (sooner if there is a cancellation) and they will fix the eye at that time. He gave me some drops to use on her 2-3x daily until the entropian can be fixed. Doc will also re-evaluate her skin at that time and if she's not noticeably better from the 2 week course of Abx, then he'll do a skin scraping while she's under anesthetic.

Doc also believes the swelling in her foot is from an old healed fracture and since she does not appear to be in any pain from it, we opted to wait to xray until she's under anesthetic. He also believes the rash on her feet & tail may be more food and/or contact allergy related (grass especially) but opted to wait to treat until she's been on the Abx for a bit before addressing it any further. We'll see how she's doing after switching her to the Natural Balance, a good grooming regimine, and a couple of weeks on the Abx and will re-evaluate at the time of her spay.

Here's what Cassie thinks about her spay appointment!!!

The poor thing! She doesn't really look so bad for all that she has wrong with her, hopefully she'll recover quickly. Is it common for cresties to get cherry eye? I though it was more prevalent in breeds who's eyes sag a little, like bulldogs, bloodhounds, etc.

Her ear and tail is what worries me the most. We're keeping them slathered up in Neosporin to keep them moist in an effort to keep the tips from dying. Regardless, she's got the sweetest personality & temperament. She LOVES everyone & everything. I'll have her adopted long before I have her healthy enough to leave.

NO, Cherry eye is not common in cresties, entropians yes, cherry eye - no.

oh duh:rolleyes: i was thinking of them as the same thing. It doesn't seem like they would be prone to entropian, either, to look at them.

Maybe ask your vet about a dextrose solution for the ears- i know when i worked at a vet's office we had a case where a cat had to have a leg amputated due to injury, and the tissue at the site of the sutures was dying off and we had to put dextrose solution on it daily- supposedly it helps prevent the tissue from dying.

edit: ehh, scratch that- I did a little reading on it= dextrose is used to prevent abcesses from forming and will cause the area to dry. It's been a long time since I worked at the vet's office!
